Supplemental Educational Services (SES)

What is SES?
Supplemental Educational Services are FREE tutoring (extra help) in school subjects like reading, math, and writing.

Why do we have free tutoring?
The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) requires Title I schools identified in need of improvement for at least two years in a row to provide SES (free tutoring) to eligible students outside of the regular school day. This free tutoring may help your child do better in school.

Who can get free tutoring?
Students who are eligible for free or reduced-priced lunch, and who are enrolled in Title I schools in the second level of school improvement may be able to receive free tutoring.

How can I get free tutoring for my child?
1. If your child is eligible for SES, your school district will contact you through a letter or phone call and will provide you with a list of approved tutoring providers. Tutoring providers have all kinds of programs, from individual tutoring to computer-based group instruction.

2. After choosing a tutoring provider, return the letter or enrollment form to your school.

3. Your child’s school district will contact the tutor you chose and take care of all arrangements. The provider will send you a letter or call about enrollment and will ask you about helping to develop a learning plan for your child.

4. It is important as a parent that you, the tutor, and the school staff meet to discuss and agree on specific goals for your child, to set up a schedule for tutoring, and to talk about how progress is going to be measured.

5. Make sure your child attends the free tutoring classes.

6. Make sure you are receiving information from the tutoring provider on the progress your child is making in reading, writing, and math.

SES Outreach Project
To help parents better understand free tutoring opportunities AKPIRC staff was trained in how to reach out to families. The staff then created the following goals:

Increase the level of participation in free tutoring through direct and personal outreach to parents whose children are eligible to receive free tutoring under NCLB.

Increase the knowledge of free tutoring among community members in high-poverty communities.

To work with these communities to build the understanding on how to let parents know about free tutoring and guide them in making decisions about it.

Reaching out to Parents:
The important work of reaching out to parents couldn’t be done alone. AKPIRC works closely with school districts, community-based and faith-based groups to help us reach families. We call these groups our Outreach Partners. They help provide written information to parents in their homes and in community settings, lead Free Tutoring Workshops for Parents, and meet privately with parents in Family Free Tutoring Guidance Sessions.

There are different levels of involvement:
Level 1—personal delivery of information about Free Tutoring by informed Free Tutoring Ambassadors to parents at their homes or in community settings apart from the school.

Level 2—Free Tutoring Workshops for Parents (90 minutes) held by Outreach Partners at the school or in community settings.

Level 3—Family Free Tutoring Guidance Sessions (about 30 to 40 minutes) for individual families provided at the school or in community settings by Outreach Partners.
