Lee Vue is the Hmong Language and Cultural Liaison for AKPIRC program in Anchorage. Lee’s own family history reflects the experience of many of the families with whom she works. In 1977, after Laos fell to communist rule, Lee escaped with her family across the Mekong River to a refugee camp in Thailand where they lived for several months before immigrating in the United States. Lee was just two years old. With the help of sponsors, Lee’s family moved to California where she spent her school age years. Although married young, Lee continued with her high school education and went on to graduate from college. In 2004 Lee, her husband, and their growing family moved to Anchorage. They are the proud parents of 10 beautiful children.
When the last refugee camp in Thailand closed down two years ago, about 20 Hmong families were sponsored by relatives living in Anchorage. Many of the families with whom Lee works in the LCL program represent these most recent Hmong immigrants to our city. Lee cares so much for the Hmong families and her dream is to help them understand the complexities of living in America and the American school system so they can help their children become educated and successful in this country.
