Resources

The resources in the following sections are designed to meet the needs of either parents/caregivers or schools. We encourage you to take a few minutes to see what each section has to offer. It is likely that you will find a resource helpful to you. We encourage you to keep checking back, as each month we will be adding addtional resources for both parents and caregivers and school staff. As with all the resources AKPIRC publishes, we encourage you to share any of these with those who you feel will benefit.

No Child Left Behind: In this section you will find information regarding No Child Left Behind (NCLB), definitions to help one better understand NCLB, explanation of what Supplemental Educational Services (free tutoring) are, and an explanation of School Choice.

State Accountability: In this section you will find information regarding Alaska's Content Standards and Grade Level Expectations (GLEs), what a Report Card to the Public is, Alaska's Standard Based Assessments, and a PowerPoint training that schools can use to help parents and caregivers better understand Alaska's GLEs, high school graduation requirements, and how parents can prepare for a parent-teacher conference.

Parent/Caregiver Involvement: In this section you will find information regarding what parents and caregivers can do to be invovled in a child's schooling, how parents and caregivers can prepare for a parent-teacher conference, what parents and caregivers can do to stay involved inbetween conferences, and a teacher's guide to self-assessing fostering parent involvement.


Parent/Caregiver and School Partnerships: In this section you will find information regarding helping children transition from grade span to grade span, what schools can do to help student's transition into high school and how schools can prepare for parent-teacher conferences.


Literacy: In this section you will find a wealth of resources regarding reading and talking with children to help them develop language skills. There is also an excellent PowerPoint presentation designed for schools to conduct a parent and caregiver workshop on ways to develop language and literacy skills in children.


Pre-natal to Kindergarten Information: In this section you will find information on child development geared for ages birth to kindergarten. There are links to organizations that focus on the early years and informative sheets on how you can help your child be ready for school.
