Rose Roehl is from the Yup’ik village of St. Mary’s where her family lived a subsistence lifestyle including going to summer fish camp, hunting, fishing and gathering berries, tundra plants, and medicines. At the age of five, her large family moved to Anchorage where she attended “city” schools. Over the years, Rose maintained her roots in Yup’ik traditions as she, along with her mother and father visited schools, churches, and celebrations to share their family stories, dances, and artifacts of the Yup’ik life. Rose loves the opportunity to spend time in villages today, attending potlatches or visiting friends and family.
Rose lives in Anchorage with her husband, Mark, and their son, Adam. Rose brings her delightful personality, rich cultural experience, and commitment to working with families and with the schools to her role as LCL for the Yup’ik community. Reflecting upon her work with families, Rose states “I want parents to know how their presence in the school building is powerful. It does something good for the child, when the parent is present...something changes for the positive. I also want them to know the joys and rewards of being actively involved in their children’s education.”
